Weather Woes?
Be Prepared For Travel Disruptions

Winter Intro

Extreme weather can happen anytime and any season.  There are some simple steps you can take to minimize the impact that winter storms, icy roads, flooding, and even hurricanes can have on your commute or travel plans.

You should always defer to your state and local public safety official’s “State of Emergency” alert or announcement.

Step 1. Prepare in advance. BEFORE a weather emergency:

  • Become a member of 511NY Rideshare.  Whether you carpool, take transit, bike, walk, or even drive alone, membership of 511NY Rideshare opens the door to services that can help ease your commute during emergencies.
    • Find a carpool partner in case your transit route is shut down, or your vehicle is not suitable for the weather conditions.
    • Not ready to commit to carpooling?  Choose Match Me in Emergencies in case you need to share a ride only during an emergency.  Your information will be in our system, but you won’t be found by other carpoolers unless there is an emergency.
    • If you commute regularly by transit, carpool or vanpool, sign up for our Guaranteed Ride Program. Limitations apply. Email us to learn more.
    • If you’re interested in trying transit, or if your normal transit route becomes disrupted, contact us for a detailed transit itinerary.

Step 2. Stay informed. DURING a weather emergency:

  • Visit for up-to-date information and news on road and transit conditions, including a list of alternate schedules or options, like shuttles.
  • Consider Telework, if available, to maintain productivity without needing to commute.
  • Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive, travel in the daylight, stay on main roads, and don’t travel alone. Follow our Winter Travel Tips below.
  • Take extra caution when walking on the sidewalk and road.
  • Always inform others of your travel schedule, whether walking, biking, taking transit or driving.

Step 3. Know before you go. AFTER a weather emergency:

  • Continue checking the 511NY Rideshare special emergency landing page for travel news and updates.
  • Continue to travel with caution. Conditions may still be dangerous. Check for road and transit conditions.
  • Contact 511NY Rideshare to help you develop a contingency travel plan for the next time a weather emergency hits.
