What is the Guaranteed Ride Program (GRP)?

The Guaranteed Ride Program is a unique solution that offers a free ride home from work during an emergency or unexpected situation. To qualify, you must be a registered 511NY Rideshare member who carpools, vanpools or takes transit* regularly.

*Limitations apply for members commuting to Queens and New York City.

When can I use the GRP?

Members may use the GRP in the event of an emergency or an unexpected situation. The following are examples of valid reasons to utilize the program:

  • Medical emergency
  • Family emergency
  • Unscheduled overtime
  • Carpool vehicle or bike breaks down

The GRP may not be used for:

  • Personal errands or travel
  • Pre-planned medical or dental appointments
  • Business-related travel
  • Non-emergency side trips on the way home
  • Trips to work

How many rides will I have per year?

Members commuting to the Hudson Valley and Long Island will have a total of $300 per year that can be used toward a qualified ride through the GRP. Members commuting to the New York City area will have $40 per individual ride and $300 per year.

How do I request a ride through the GRP?

Please refer to the region where you work below for details on requesting a ride. Instructions will vary depending on your work location.

If you work on Long Island:

To request a ride with a local cab provider, follow the steps below:

  1. Contact one of the follow cab providers
    1. Nassau County
      1. L&W Yellow LLC: 516-326-9090
    2. Suffolk County
      1. Lindy’s Taxi: 631-265-2500
  2. Request a paper voucher from your onsite administrator or email Lainey Benson, Outreach Coordinator, at Lbenson@511nyrideshare.org for a taxi voucher.
  3. Complete the voucher and provide it to the cab driver at the beginning of the ride.

Starting January 1, 2019, members can start using Uber as a GRP service provider. To add the 511NY Rideshare profile to your Uber account, register through the link below:

Please allow 24 to 48 hours for our team to approve your account. Individuals will receive an email with steps on how to add the 511NY Rideshare profile to their Uber account. To order a ride, please follow the steps below:

  1. Enter destination
  2. Tap on the profile switcher
  3. Switch to the “511NY Rideshare” profile

While requesting a ride, members will be prompted to answer questions regarding the reason for their ride, which must be completed to qualify.

To use Lyft for your GRP Ride:

  1. Call 718-886-1343, Monday through Friday after 6am or before 7pm. Our Member Support team will determine the eligibility of the ride based on the quoted trip cost, reason for the ride and trip location.
  2. Once approved, Member Support will arrange the ride over the phone and provide individuals with the make and model of the vehicle, license plate number and driver name.
  3. Please be sure to note all the details before accepting the ride from the Lyft driver.

Members will have a combined total of $300 to utilize per year between Uber, Lyft and the local cab service.

 

If you work in the Hudson Valley:

To request a ride with a local cab provider, follow the steps below:

  1. Print and fill out a Hudson Valley GRP Voucher. All vouchers are emailed to members after they are approved for the GRP.
  2. Contact a designated service provider, identified in your welcome packet to schedule a pick up. Members will receive their welcome packet via email after they are approved for the GRP.
  3. Give the cab driver your completed Hudson Valley GRP Voucher at the time of pick up.

To use Uber for your GRP ride, you must add the 511NY Rideshare profile to your Uber account before an emergency arises through the link below:

Note: Service Providers (Uber, Lyft and Local Cab Companies) can only pick you up at your 511NYRideshare registered work location.

 

If you work in New York City:

To request a ride through a local cab or transit, follow the steps below:

  1. Take transit or a local cab provider to your destination during an emergency. Individuals who take a cab can use a provider of their choice. Please remember to keep the receipt, as 511NY Rideshare will be reimbursing you for your ride.
  2. Fill out the reimbursement voucher. Members will receive vouchers via email after they are registered and approved for the GRP. Please note that incomplete vouchers will not be accepted.
  3. Mail the completed voucher with your receipt to the address provided on the voucher within 30 days of taking a ride. The commuter will be reimbursed via check for their commute, up to $40 per trip (gratuities are not reimbursable).

Please note all guaranteed ride trips are reviewed to ensure that they follow the program guidelines and are subject to approval. Trip expenses over $40 will be billed to the user by Uber. Through the Guaranteed Ride Program, you still are only able to access $300 in total ride credits per year between Uber, Lyft, taxi and public transit.
